THE NUMBERS OF PROSECCO

The Veneto denomination knows no crisis, indeed it looks to the future with positivity.

The pandemic has put a strain on the wine sector, in particular the operators more oriented towards the catering channel. On the other hand, at the same time, it has increased the opportunities for those exposed with large retailers, so much so that the name has managed to increase its sales”.

In 2020 the most well-known Veneto Denomination in the world recorded an increase in sales of 2.8% compared to 2019, sales which involved 21.5% in Italy and the remaining 78.5% abroad. Truly impressive numbers also in terms of the composition of the DOC Prosecco: 24 450 hectares of vineyards, 11 609 winemakers and 1169 winemakers, of which 347 sparkling wine producers.

In 2020, the main destination Countries for Prosecco exports were the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. The first two saw consumption of 115 and 80 million bottles respectively, showing a stable trend compared to 2019. Germany, on the other hand, recorded an increase of 5%, as did France (+ 15.3%), Belgium (+ 18.1%) and Switzerland (+ 10.2%).

Last year, a new type of Denomination was launched on the market: Prosecco DOC Rosé. “In 2020, in just three months, 16.8 million bottles were bottled by 111 sparkling wine producers, 3.4% of the total production of Prosecco Doc“. Also in this first half of 2021, bottling has witnessed a positive trend, in fact it has reached 37 million bottles and it is estimated that it will reach about 70 million at the end of the year. “Italy will absorb about 15-20% of production, while the remaining 80-85% will be destined for export to the following main markets: USA, UK, Canada, Scandinavia, France, East Asia“.
