PINOT GRIGIO BOOM IN THE WORLD

Italian Pinot Grigio continues to grow in the world and improves its positioning, especially in the US and UK.

“If Pinot Grigio is one of the most successful Italian wines, especially in the United States, the merit recognised as leader and forerunner of this typology is of a reality such as Santa Margherita”.

In recent years and in particular in 2021, thanks to the remarkable growth of this type in the Triveneto area, Italy has become the world leader in Pinot Grigio. Suffice it to say that in the year just ended, bottlings of PG wine with the designation amounted to 2.4 million hectolitres, an increase of 6%. Of these, 1.8 million hl can be attributed to DOC delle Venezie, the second largest PDO in Italy in terms of volume.

“With its almost 27,000 hectares of vineyards, of which 14,000 claimed as Doc delle Venezie, the largest denomination at national level – which closes 2021 with a +5.11% of bottled wine (+89,517 hl), about 12 million bottles more than in 2020 – today represents a guarantee of stability in the Northeast.” The DOC, in fact, allows the wineries in the area to have an important support in terms of quality, positioning and value, which is fundamental at international level. These characteristics, in fact, allow companies to expand their network and sales globally.

The main destination markets in 2021 for this denomination were the United States and the United Kingdom. In the USA, consumption of Pinot Grigio is rewarding the premium, super premium, ultra premium and luxury segments with growth rates ranging from +2% to +7%, all at the expense of the lower and cheaper offerings. There are similar trends in the UK, where the designation is confirmed as the best-selling still white wine in 2021.

“The DOC is starting to receive the economic and social recognition it deserves. The appellation continues to work to maintain this positive trend and encourage quality production that respects the environment and is more responsive to the demands of the Global Consumer.”
