ITALIAN WINES IN CANADA: THE LATEST TRENDS

According to some Canadian buyers in Canada three main trends are emerging in the field of Italian wine.

Over the last 20 years, Italian wine has registered a growth in terms of imports on the Canadian market, each year more and more incremental“.

In fact, Italy is the third largest exporter of wine to Canada, despite the fact that in 2020 due to the world pandemic there was a decrease in volume of 3.1%. In recent years consumption of Italian wine has increased in all 13 provinces of Canada and in particular in the provinces of Ontario. This trend was encouraged by the large Italian community present in the area and by the presence of many Italian restaurants, especially essential for entry level wines.

In 2021, some very interesting trends are being observed: sparkling wines, organic and low sugar wines and the use of digital technology. “The Prosecco brand has created a culture and a trend that has led Canadian consumers to consume more and more habitually sparkling wines, previously consumed only during special occasions“. In Canada but also in the rest of the world another trend we are witnessing is the growth in the consumption of organic wines with low calorie content. This trend is mainly found in the city of Toronto where consumers are very much appreciating vegan wines with organic certifications. Furthermore, in Canada it is becoming increasingly necessary to maintain a constant dialogue with the agents who guard the territory. “A communication that must necessarily be supported also by the use of digital tools through the continuous updating of its website, by uploading brochures and technical data sheets; as well as the constant updating of social channels, useful for maintaining high engagement with one’s business “.
