ITALIAN WINE EXPORTS KNOW NO LIMITS

According to an analysis conducted by Wine News, Italian wine shipments are close to 4.5 billion euros in the first eight months of the year.

“Shipments of Italian wine around the world in the period January-August 2021 are close to 4.5 billion euros (4.496 billion to be precise), marking a growth of +15.5% over the same period in 2020 and especially +12.2% over 2019”.

Although in this period we have seen a considerable growth in costs throughout the supply chain, from materials to transport and energy, 2021 is a very positive year for Italy. Exports are not stopping, indeed according to Istat data analysed by Wine News, they continue to grow. Great Britain and Japan, however, are the only countries that have slightly slowed down the import of Italian wine: the first because of Brexit, the second because of the economic crisis that is affecting the entire nation.

“Impressive, in a positive sense, is the data coming from the United States, followed closely by Germany, the solid second place for Italian wine exports, with China now firmly back at the levels of 2019, while Canada, South Korea, Russia, the Netherlands and Sweden continue to grow exponentially”.

In Europe, the country that imported the most Italian wine in the first 8 months of 2021 is Germany, for a value of 713 million euros, recording a growth of +9.9% on 2019 and +6.7% on 2020. It is followed by Switzerland with €254 million (+9.8% over the same period in 2019 and +12.7% over 2020), the Netherlands with €135 million (+35% over 2019 and +14.4% over 2020), Sweden with the same value as the Netherlands (+14.4% over 2019 and +11.6% over 2020) and Russia at €79 million (+21.5% over 2019 and +38.6% over 2020).

“It is the figure from the United States that stands out above all others: in just eight months, the top destination for Italian wine has already amply surpassed the billion euro wall (€1.16 billion), up on both 2020 (+22.7%) and 2019 (+19.4%)”. Exceptional numbers also come from Canada, with an import value of €241 million (+10% on 2019 and +12.1% on 2020), South Korea at €55 million (+150% on 2019 and +139% on 2020) and Hong Kong, which imported €19 million (+3.8% on 2019 and +35.7% on 2020). “China, with €81 million of imported wine, is exactly on the level of 2019 and up sharply on the disastrous 2020 (+58.8%)”.
