DOUBLE GOLD MEDALS FOR MARCHESI DI BAROLO

The well-known Piedmontese winery managed to win two gold medals.

Recently Marchesi di Barolo, a renowned winery in Piedmont, received an excellent score for two of its wines: Decanter awarded 96 points to Barolo Coste di Rose 2018 and Barolo Cannubi 2018.

Coste di Rose is a prestigious hill facing east in the commune of Barolo. The considerable slope – over 40% – favours the perfect ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes, which are particularly demanding of light and heat. It is located within the geological area of the Serravalliana era, but, curiously enough, the quality of the soil is of medium limestone content and is particularly rich in quartzose sand and very fine silt, so much so that fossil shells emerge during normal cultivation operations. These special characteristics give the Nebbiolo intense and fine aromas reminiscent of wild mint.

Barolo Coste di Rose 2018 has a luminous garnet red colour and a rich, intense bouquet, with hints of ripe berries, hints of black cherry, plum and dark cherry, followed by tertiary components of liquorice and black pepper. On the palate it is warm, round and slightly savoury, with an elegant and powerful tannic texture, which overall contributes to a persistent and brilliant character.

Cannubi is the long, gradually rising hill in the centre of the Barolo area. This is where soils from the Serravalliana and Tortoniana periods meet and amalgamate, giving rise to grey-bluish marls rich in magnesium and manganese carbonates that, on the surface, turn a whitish-grey colour due to the action of atmospheric agents: clays mixed with very fine sands, impregnated with a strong calcareous component of magnesium and manganese carbonate. Technically referred to as Marne di Sant’Agata fossils, but known in jargon as Toû, they are composed on average of 55% clay, 30% sands and 15% limestone. Surrounded by higher hill systems, it is protected from disturbances and excessive ventilation and enjoys a very special, unique microclimate.

The Barolo Cannubi 2018 has a ruby red colour with abundant garnet reflections and a particularly intense bouquet, with hints of ripe blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, which are followed by spices, coffee and liquorice. It is warm, structured and full-bodied on the palate, being generous in persistence, elegant and austere on the finish.
