WINE SALES IN GDO GET EXCELLENT RESULTS IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2021

The Italian GDO recorded a very positive trend in the first quarter of the year.

The data for the first quarter show an increase of 22% for wine sales in large-scale distribution, of which + 15% for still wine and + 51% for sparkling wines”.

This trend, which began in the year of the pandemic, is also continuing positively in 2021, where in fact wine sales in large-scale distribution have seen an increase of +22% for a value of 766 million euros. For this data, however, it must be considered that in the first quarter the sales of wine for the Christmas holidays of 2020 were also included. In fact, sales of sparkling wine recorded a +51% for a total value of 154 million euros. “The classic method accelerates significantly compared to Charmat (+ 83% compared to + 47%), while sweet sparkling wines are always lagging behind (+ 31%)”.

On the other hand, still wines recorded a more contained growth but however they have a much greater value, 596 million euros. “Within the still wines category: DOC better (+ 20%) than IGT (+ 15%), in turn better than common wines (+ 3%). White wines (+ 20%) better than rosé wines (+ 17%) and red wines (+ 11%)”.

The sparkling wine market confirms itself as a market essentially driven by volumes, while for still wines there is a greater balance between prices and volumes“.
