THE PANDEMIC HAS ENCOURAGED THE BAG IN BOX PHENOMENON

The bag in box format has recorded important numbers in the year of the pandemic.

Analysts tell us about a format that is rightfully among the main global trends which have to be monitored in this 2021 and for the next few years”.

The Covid tsunami has significantly accelerated the bag in box trend, invented in Australia as early as the 1960s. This format is especially appreciated abroad, in countries such as Sweden, USA, Canada; while in Italy consumers still show distrust of this wine type.

In Italy the bag in box has recorded significant growth at the GDO level“, in fact almost 20 million liters (+ 26.4%) were sold for a value of 35.3 million euros (+ 27.8%). On a national level, bag-in-box sales are divided as follows: 55% Central and Sardinia, 30% North and 15% South.

Italy is the first exporter of wine by volume and the first world producer“; exports were worth almost 100 million euros. The first Italian bag in box importer is Sweden, with a value of 23 million euros; followed by Norway (17 million), United Kingdom (14 million), Germany (10 million), USA (6 million) and Canada (over 5 million).

“The Abruzzo bag in box is also expressed with the wines of Codice Citra, whose 2020 production is over one thousand hectoliters in volume for about 150 thousand euros in value, of which 63% for Italy and 37% for abroad, especially Canada and Germany “.
